Do you have 30 minutes?

We’ll walk you through three steps to get prepared for disasters and hazards, all within 30 minutes.

1. Stay informed

Sign up all your devices with AC Alert, the mass notification system for Albany and Alameda County. For evacuation orders, evacuation warnings, and Extreme Fire Weather, we send AC Alert notifications over phone, text message, and email. Need help? Learn more.

2. Get your zone

Look up your evacuation zone now and note it down. During a disaster, emergency responders will use this portal to post real-time, zone-specific evacuation warnings and orders for the City of Albany, as well as for neighboring cities like El Cerrito and Berkeley.

3. Make an emergency kit

After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for several days. To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.

Collect the following items:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)

  • Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)

  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert

  • Flashlight

  • First aid kit

  • Extra batteries

  • Whistle (to signal for help)

  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)

  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)

  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)

  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)

  • Manual can opener (for food)

  • Local maps

  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Congratulations!

You are now more prepared for disasters and emergencies than you were 30 minutes ago. The preparation you do today is crucial for your future. If you’re interested in doing more to prepare yourself, your family, or your neighborhood, consider making a family plan, or joining a community program.
